Response to Aceh
December 26th 2004
On December 26th 2004 the world’s worst underwater earthquake
for 40 yrs - measuring 9.3 on the Richter scale - triggered a tsunami
causing catastrophe for millions of people across Asia. An estimated 250,000
people were killed with at least 1 million people across Indonesia, Sri
Lanka, India, Thailand, Maldives, Seychelles and Burma left homeless.
Indonesia was the worst affected by the tsunami, with an estimated 126,000
dead and a further 113,000 reported missing. Some coastal villages in
the province of Aceh lost more than 70% of their inhabitants and of the
total number of people displaced, between 6,000 and 8,000 were separated
and unaccompanied children.
The initial emergency response to the tsunami has now wound down and
attention is now focused on reconstruction and recovery which will take
many years. Amongst other areas, huge challenges remain in maternal and
child health, including the prevention of malnutrition in the under fives,
pregnant women and lactating mothers.
Our
response - A cook book to help tsunami victims
In response to the above, Barbara Jayson, Founder of the Foundation
for Mother and Child Health and her colleague Jenny de Montfort together
collated a book of recipes in support of the tsunami victims in Indonesia
and Sri Lanka. The cook book, “East meets West”, features
recipes from over 60 celebrity cooks, restauranteurs and food and wine
writers such as Nigella Lawson, Jamie Oliver, Anjum Anand, Peter Gordon,
Atul Kochhar, James Martin, Ken Hom, Ainsley Harriott, Rick Stein, Hugh
Fearnley-Whittingstall, William Wongso, Jancis Robinson and Matt Skinner.
‘East meets West’ has been beautifully produced with lovely
coloured photographs making this a firm favourite to give as a present
for Christmas or birthday.
It can be purchased through Amazon at www.amazon.co.uk
with all profits from the sale of this glossy hard back cookbook continuing
to aid the long term rehabilitation of children and their parents affected
by the tsunami in Indonesia and Sri Lanka.
What has ‘East meets West’ achieved?
In May 2006, ‘East meets West’ won the coveted Special Award
of the Jury prize presented by the Gourmand World Cookbook awards.
The book has sold all over the world principally in the UK, Australia,
New Zealand, South Africa and throughout Asia.
- In Sri Lanka we have helped the village of Tangalle
through the British charity START. The hospital is now clean and has
working fans, the school is better equipped with an emphasis on dance
and music to help the children express themselves (some children are
only now able to speak) and children are being taught to swim.
- Through the London Buddhist Vihara Tsunami appeal, funds have gone
towards rehousing devastated families through IDEAS (Initiatives in
Development of Entrepreneur Approaches and Strategies). We have helped
towards building 10 houses in Duwe Modara near Galle and have helped
self- employed people such as fishermen and local businessmen get back
on their feet.
- In Indonesia we concentrated on supporting programmes
in Aceh. Working with ‘Response to
Aceh’ we supported preschool education programmes for children
living in and around the Meulaboh area. Our funds also supported health
and nutrition education programmes for mothers and provided health education
training for community health workers.

time, energy and recipes to help this charitable effort and, at £14.99,

‘Response to Aceh’ is an initiative which was set up and
designed to recognise and alleviate Health, Nutrition and Early Childhood
education problems in Aceh following the devastating Tsunami disaster
on December 26, 2004.
The Initiative consisted of two integrated projects: Early Childhood Education
and Health & Nutrition education for parents
All its activities concentrated on helping mothers and children from
impoverished backgrounds living in five sub-districts in Aceh Barat affected
by the tsunami.
Though starting later than many other NGO’s, ‘Response to
Aceh’ assisted and empowered local people to help themselves with
great emphasis being put on the sustainability of the programmes themselves.
The following is a summary of activities undertaken by ‘Response
to Aceh’ since October 2005.
